Life was limping back to normal in the city as the intensity of rains lessened and water that had accumulated in residential areas started receding.
With the intensity of rains lessening in Pune city that recorded just 14 mm of downpour until 8.30 am on Wednesday morning, the discharge of water from Khadakvasla dam was now 7,750 cusecs, Mulshi dam 20,000 cusecs and Pavana 8,000 cusecs leading to a turnaround in the situation, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Laxman Damse said.
Some of the areas where water had entered from Mula and Mutha rivers were Vithalwadi, Aundh, Bopodi, Rajput Jhopadpatti, Kamgarputla, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Deccan, Balewadi, Karve Nagar, Khilaswasti Patil Estate, Indira Nagar, Sangamwadi, Kachiwasti Sainath Yerawada, Beggars Home, Mangalwar Peth, Sitaphal, Jugtawadi, Ambelwadi, Vithalnagar, Dhankawadi, Vidyapith and Maharshi Nagar, he said.
On Tuesday, 5,500 families had to be shifted to safer places as the situation in the city became worse after a deluge caused by the swollen Mula and Mutha rivers.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Solapur district, particularly at Pandharpur, many areas were submerged under water following discharge from the dam into Chandrabhaga and Bhima rivers, Irrigation Department sources said in Pune on Wednesday.
The current discharge from Pandharpur dam was over 2,50,000 cusecs, making the flood situation critical, they added.
