Bihar Governor Buta Singh on Thursday ordered a judicial inquiry into the police firing which killed three persons in Maharajganj in Siwan district on Tuesday, according to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain.
A statement issued by Hussain, a former Union minister, said the governer ordered the probe after a BJP delegation met him at Rajbhavan on Thursday afternoon.
Hussain claimed that Singh also assured the delegation that he would consider the National Democratic Alliance's demand for providing adequate compensation to the bereaved families and take immediate steps to appoint a superintendent of police in Siwan.
Other members of the BJP delegation included senior party leaders Rajendra Prasad Gupta, Anil Sharma, Kiran Ghai, Sanjay Mayukh, Satyendra Kushwaha and Prem Ranjan Patel.
Describing the killing as 'a cold-blooded murder', Hussain demanded stringent punitive action against the police officials responsible for the firing.
The NDA and Left parties, which described the police firing as 'an example of extreme brutality', had been demanding that Singh institute a judicial probe into the firing. The Left parties had even sought immediate recall of the governor after the firing.
The police had fired on a crowd which blocked the blocked the highway connecting Maharajganj with Chapra and Patna and threw stones on the policemen angry over the death of a 13-year-old boy in a road accident.
