Cross-border infiltration from Pakistan and militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir have come down considerably in the last eight months, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Quoting a Jammu and Kashmir government report, Jaiswal said there were 207 infiltrations and 1,466 terrorist related incidents between April and November compared to respective figures of 463 and 1,777 in 2004.
He said India has conveyed to Pakistan at the highest level that the current peace process between the two countries will be undermined unless Pakistan takes effective action to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism, including training camps, launch pads and communication links between terrorist groups on the Indian side and their handlers on the Pakistani side.
The minister said Pakistan needs to fulfill its commitment that it will not permit any territory under its control to be used to support terrorism in any manner.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home S Raghupathy said Pakistani Army troops are building bunkers, observation towers and new posts in close proximity to the International Border.
These included areas like Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner, he told Rajya Sabha.
He said though construction and improvement of defences is an ongoing process, Pakistani activities are being closely monitored and suitable remedial measures are being adopted to deny advantages to the adversary.
Raghupathy also said a total of 220 infiltrators/militants were killed and 7,628 were apprehended by the security forces in 2005.
The majority of infiltrating terrorists were affiliated to Hizb-ul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, he said.
