Two security guards were killed and another injured in a firing incident in the Indian embassy premises in Kathmandu early on Tuesday.

The cause of the firing has not been ascertained and details are awaited.

The victims were Indian nationals, embassy sources said, adding that preliminary probe pointed to accidental fire.

"Two guards belonging to the Central Industrial Security Force were killed and another injured in an accidental firing that took place at the barrack within the embassy premises at 5am today (Tuesday)," Sanjaya Verma, counsellor, Press and Information, said.

The injured guard has been admitted to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital at Maharajgunj for medical treatment.

However, the names of those killed and injured in the incident are not yet known.

The embassy is carrying out further investigations into the matter.
