The Bhartiya Janata Party on Wednesday demanded that the army be given a freehand to tackle terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to rediff.com on Wednesday morning soon after jawans of the Indian army were killed in a car bomb explosion in Srinagar, party parliamentary spokesperson Vijay Kumar Malhotra wondered what fight against terrorism Dr Manmohan Singh is talking about in the US when terrorists are striking at will in India.

"I saw shocking visuals on the television a short while ago. We condemn the incident that has come within hours of Dr Singh's statement in the United States that we should fight against terrorism. What is the point of saying all this when our own jawans are killed in the Valley," he said.

Malhotra said that matter would be raised by the party in both houses in the parliament in a big manner during the forthcoming Parliament session that begins on July 25.

"We are only concerned about 9/11 and 7/7 but not about what things going on within our country. Other countries are making laws to deal with terrorism while we have repealed Prevention of Terrorism Act.

"We have also taken note of the statement of the chief of the army staff General J J Singh, who said that 2000 infiltrators are waiting to cross over into India," he said.

In Delhi, the army headquarters preferred to wait for a detailed report before issuing a statement. "Within minutes of the incidents, I called up my counterpart in Srinagar and asked him to send a detailed report," army spokesperson told rediff.com.
