Seeking immediate Central intervention to establish "lasting peace" in Karbi Anglong in Assam, JD (U) chief George Fernandes and an legislator from the state on Friday met President A P J Abdul Kalam and asked him to appoint a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the ethnic violence in the district.
Fernandes and MLA Dharamsinh Teron, who met Kalam at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, said the state Government had totally failed to control the situation in the district where over 75 people have been killed in clashes between Dimasas and Karbis.
"The situation is deteriorating and the Centre must take immediate steps," Fernandes told reporters after the meeting.
He said a Parliamentary Committee should be appointed to investigate the incidents leading to violence.
"The Committee should also suggest steps for lasting peace in the region as the callous attitude of the state Government in dealing with the political problem is responsible for the ethnic violence," Fernandes said.
Teron, who represents the Autonomus State Demand Committee, said almost 50,000 people had been displaced in the strife-torn region and there was an urgent need to provide food and relief materials there. "No relief has been provided to the affected people till date," he said.
Assam's main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad also submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday seeking Central intervention.
Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal had also visited the violence-hit areas Thursday.
