Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Thursday suggested a multi-pronged approach to control the problem of human trafficking.

"Our approach has to be not one-sided but multi-pronged. One, strengthen the government machinery, control the exploitative forces in the society and then create a spiritual, psychological attitude, which can prevail on people," Patil said at a two-day national seminar on human trafficking organised by the Home Ministry, National Human Rights Commission and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

"Approach the problem from this angle and talk about it in society, even through educational institutions and media," he said.

Patil said necessary laws will be made to deal with the problem. "If it is required to change the laws, the laws will be changed and we are in the process of strengthening the police machinery. It (police) is not a machinery that can meet all our requirements. This problem has to be dealt with by going beyond the law," he said.

Earlier, NHRC chairman A S Anand said society needs to change its mindset to put an end to the scourge of trafficking.

"The society must respond to the problem as its own and not somebody else's baby. The amendment of law would help but not solve. It would also require sensitisation of law, judiciary and law enforcement agencies, as well as that of civil society," he said.
