Even as there was some respite from the heavy downpour, Karnataka government on Thursday extended the closure of schools and colleges in the city and surrounding areas by two more days.

As the city continued to be under a spell of incessant drizzle, the government, as a precautionary measure, has decided to close down schools and colleges till October 29, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R Ramalinga Reddy said.

The government had declared a holiday for all educational institutions on October 26 and 27, after the rains disrupted normal life and flooded several localities.

Reddy, who is also in-charge of Bangalore district, chaired a high-level meeting of officials and elected representatives from the city and reviewed the situation.

He said the city corporation has taken up 222 works in flood-hit areas at a cost of Rs 30 crore and added that Rs 20 crore would be released to Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat and Rs 50 crore to seven city municipal councils for initiating immediate relief work.

Of the nine relief centres opened to rehabilitate the affected, four have been shut down, after the situation improved in the city following let up in rains.

The city corporation has so far paid compensation to the tune of Rs 15 lakh, apart from Rs one lakh to the kith and kin of those killed.

Meanwhile, reports said parts of North Karnataka and Mysore city have been experiencing heavy rains.
