Greeting people on Diwali and Id-ul-Fitr, President A P J Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh  expressed hope on Monday that the festivals would further cement bonds between various communities and usher in peace, prosperity and happiness for all.

In his message, the President said, 'As we light lamps during this festival, let us work and contribute in whichever way possible to reach help those affected in recent mishaps and sufferings'. Conveying his good wishes to people in India and abroad, he said this festival of lights was a time for joy and happiness and hope for an even better future.

'Festivals are occasions for all of us to come forward in the service of humanity and gladden the hearts of the needy', he said.

Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said the festival emphasised the enduring significance of time-tested values and uniting them in a common brotherhood.

Describing Diwali as an important occasion for festivities, all-round joy and togetherness, Dr Singh said its underlying message of victory of good over evil should guide the people in all their endeavours.

"This week is a special one as Diwali and Id-ul-Fitr are celebrated across the country with gaiety and fervour. It is hoped that these festivals would further cement bonds between various communities," he said. "May the festival of lights this year usher in peace, prosperity and happiness for all."
