A non-resident Indian restaurant manager has been charged with inflicting grievous injuries to his compatriot, leaving him dead.

The Central local court on Monday ordered 23-year-old Rasandeep Singh Gujral to surrender his passport and report daily at Five Dock police station in Sydney until his case came up at Downing Centre on January 17, setting bail at $ 200,000 for causing bodily harm to Sanjeev Kumar.

Kumar, 25, an Australian resident, lay at a local hospital with serious head injuries as a result of a scuffle between him and Gujral, the Sidney Morning Herald reported. However, Gujral's lawyer argued that his client had acted in self-defence, trying to break-up a fight already in progress outside his restaurant.
