Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday advocated the launch of a 'national campaign' to root out corruption. He was speaking at the release of Mission of the Masses, written by Chaudhury Lal Singh, a Congress Member of Parliament from Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.

The book is a chronicle of Lal Singh's efforts to help the people of his state, where he also served as health minister for 15 months.

Observing that Lal Singh made determined efforts to root out corruption in the delivery of health services during his ministerial term, Dr Singh said, 'the fight against corruption has to be a national campaign.'

"We need more people like Lal Singh to carry forward that work," he said. "I often say that all power is societal trust. You cannot sit on power, you have to spend it, but for public good."

He added that 'all is not not well with our system and that we need a determined drive to root our corruption, to root out its causes which gives rise to persistence of social inequalities and social injustice.'
