The Liberhan Commission is expected to submit its report on the Babri mosque demolition by December 31 this year, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

"We are informally told that the report could be given by December 31, 2006," Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil told the House.

He was answering questions raised by members from Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and the Left as to whether the government plans to give another extension to the Commission.

"It's not the question of giving extension. The Commission is writing its report. We have been informally told that the report could be given before that period," Patil said.

He cited procedural reasons like stay orders obtained by some witnesses on personal appearance before the Commission for delay in finalisation of the report.

The RJD's Devendra Prasad Yadav pointed out that the Liberhan Commission has so far been given 39 extensions.

"The Commision had to wait because some witnesses got the stay order against personal appearance," the Minister said in his response. "We are all expecting to get the report."
