Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Thursday night thanked Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee for ending her 25-day fast and said he was happy with her decision.

Chatterjee told a private TV channel that he had already appealed to Banerjee to end her hunger srike and join the Lok Sabha session.

"I am happy that Mamta Banerjee has finally called off her hunger srike," Chatterjee said.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India-Marxist thanked Banerjee for deciding to call off her fast launched in protest against "forcible" acquisition of farmland at Singur for the small car project of Tata Motors.

Party leader Rabin Deb alleged that an atmosphere of uncertainty was created due to Banerjee's fast. However, it was finally "removed" with her decision to end the fast.

He said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had positively approached Banerjee on the Singur land issue.

Senior CPI-M leader and State Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty said he was relieved to know that Banerjee had ended her hunger strike.
