Nirmalendu, kidnapped from Harnichak here on January 17, phoned his family members from a PCO booth at around 2 a.m. He was later brought back home by his father and brother.

Nirmalendu's brother Bimalendu Diwakar said the boy was under sedation and very weak.

The abduction of Nirmalendu, Class IX student of Don Bosco Public School, had triggered widespread protests in the state capital with children holding demonstrations and relay fasts.

Police, meanwhile, claimed the boy was released under sustained police pressure.
