As many as 13 aircraft and eight helicopters of the Defence forces have crashed in last 13 months, killing 13 defence personnel and one civilian, Lok Sabha was told Thursday.

Compensation to the next of kin of the defence personnel have been paid as per the services norms and an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh to the only civilian killed in the accident involving MIG-21 BIS aircraft of the Indian Air Force has been paid, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a written reply.

There was no loss of civil property in the accidents, which occurred from January 2005 up to January 31, 2006, except the accident which took place on December 13, 2005 in which paddy crop was damaged in the open field, he said.

Each aircraft accident in the defence forces is investigated through a Court of Inquiry and remedial actions according to the recommendations of the Court are taken, the Defence Minister said.
