Delhi Police Commissioner Dr K K Paul gave transfer orders to Deputy Commissioner (Special Cell) Ajay Kumar who was handling the case relating to espionage by the US embassy official identified as Rosanne Minchew who had been receiving information from S S Paul of the National Security Council Secretariat.
S S Paul was working as an official who had access to assessment of intelligence inputs of various agencies.
He was arrested by the special cell on orders from Intelligence Bureau sometime back.
Though the Delhi police described the transfer as routine and refused to say anything more, those in the know were aware that IB suspected Ajay Kumar for giving information to various newspapers and other media organisations in this case, which had put the intelligence agencies in a difficult situation.
The case came in handy for Dr Paul to sign transfer orders due to Ajay Kumar's wife Amita's alleged link with a firm that was run by a smuggler.
Amita Exports, raided by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, was registered in the name of Amita Kumar, wife of Ajay Kumar though it was being run by Ashwini Aggarwal.
Amita Exports had allegedly evaded taxes to the tune of Rs 9 crore in 2005.
After the story of the American woman's interest in the Indian intelligence system was revealed by newspapers, IB kept tabs on some officers who were speaking out of turn and giving information to the newsmen.
