Should Sonia Gandhi have resigned?

Thursday morning it seemed as if the Union Cabinet would recommend an ordinance to the President that will prevent disqualification of Members of Parliament who were also holding office of profit, among them Congress president and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The Cabinet -- under fire from various quarters for the UPA government's decision to end the Budget session of Parliament suddenly and bring in the ordinance -- met, but there was no word on the ordinance.

Deliberations then shifted to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi's home, and by afternoon she had resigned as member of Parliament from Rae Bareilly and as chairperson of the National Advisory Council, the latter post being the one that almost cost her seat in Parliament. But not as UPA chairperson.

She also said she would seek a re-election.

Do you think this is a face-saving step by Sonia Gandhi?

Has she lost some of the sheen that she acquired when she stepped aside for Manmohan Singh to become prime minister in 2004?

Or, do you think she did right, and has emerged with her image intact?
