The Supreme Court's refusal on Monday to grant relief to more than 40,000 traders facing the sealing threat echoed in the Delhi assembly.
Noisy scenes ensued as Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party members clashed on the passage of a resolution asking Chief Minister Sheila Dixit to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resolve the issue at the earliest.
While members cutting across party lines sought adjournment of the House to show solidarity with the traders facing the sealing heat, some ruling Congress MLAs opposed the Apex Court order.
The assembly witnessed noisy scenes with both BJP and Congress legislators trying to outpace each other to take political mileage on the issue.
The saffron party members opposed the resolution on sealing moved by Mukesh Sharma of Congress.
Soon after the House assembled for the day, the leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi drew the attention of the assembly members to the Supreme Court's order directing the MCD to resume sealing in the city.
"The situation is very volatile in the city in the backdrop of the Supreme Court order on sealing. Under the leadership of the chief minister, all the MLAs irrespective of party backings should march to the Prime Minister's Office and urge the prime minister to come out with a solution," said Mukhi while seeking adjournment of the session till Tuesday.
BJP MLAs M L Sodhi and Kulwant Rana joined Mukhi and started shouting, "We want a solution and not the session. Either stop the sealing or stop the session."
A reluctant Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh had to give in when some members of the treasury bench too sought adjournment of the session, urging the chief minister to meet the prime minister on the matter.
