Kidnapping is a booming industry in Bihar. In the last three months itself, 1302 people have been abducted in the state.

According to a progress report of pending abduction cases submitted by state government to the Patna high court, 599 fresh abduction cases were registered in month of August, 371 in September and 332 in October this year.

"In last three months alone, 1302 cases of fresh abduction reported officially," a senior police official, who was present in the court on behalf of the government to submit report, told rediff.com on Monday.

The official figure suggests that abductions are taking place in Bihar as usual. But there are also a lot of cases that go unreported.

Hearing public interest litigation in this regard, the Patna high court observed that the present crime graph was a matter of concern and could not be overlooked.

The court also blasted the state government for failing to arrest nearly 5,000 absconding kidnappers despite several court orders and directed the chief secretary to come up with a concrete plan. It told the state government to arrest all accused no later than March 31, 2007.

"Do what you will. We want the number of absconders to be brought to zero. By that date, the 4,951 persons listed under the category and wanted in kidnapping cases must be arrested," the court said.
