After a trial lasting 20 years, a Delhi court on Friday sentenced a 39-year-old Delhi government employee to a month's rigorous imprisonment.

He was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 500 to give a riot compensation.

After hearing the arguments of both the prosecution and the defence, Special Judge Sunil Gaur held Atma Singh guilty of taking Rs 500 bribe from one Harman Singh, a victim of the 1986 riots in Delhi for giving him the amount of compensation.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 35,000 on Atma Singh.

According to the prosecution, on April 21, 1986, Atma Singh was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 500 from Harman Singh, a resident of Karol Bagh, when he was giving the compensation amount to him.

Atma Singh was convicted under the Indian Penal Code.

"Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case, I am of the opinion that the convict did not deserve any leniency even if the bribe amount is very low so that it will act as a deterrent to the entire society," the judge said while delivering the order.
