3 Jharkhand MLAs move SC to restrain Speaker

Three independent legislators from Jharkhand, who were served with disqualification notices by the Assembly Speaker, on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking to restrain him from taking up action against them.

The petition moved by Enos Ekka, Stephen Marandi and Kamlesh Kumar Singh was mentioned by advocate K V Viswanathan before a bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, which decided to hear it on Monday.

The three MLAs have sought a direction to Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari for maintaining status quo with regard to the number of members in the house till the Arjun Munda government proves its majority on the floor of the House.

They have also sought that the Speaker should restrain from dealing in any manner that adjudication proceedings on the pending disqualification proceedings against them.

The MLAs also wanted police protection saying that there was a threat to their lives and that there had been occasions when they were been manhandled after withdrawing support to he National Democratic Alliance.

Namdhari Singh had on Thursday issued notices to the three MLAs on separate petitions seeking their disqualification.
