In a grim reminder that women in Delhi are unsafe, two unidentified menĀ attempted to burn alive a fashion designer outside her residence in a posh south Delhi locality.

The attackers, who came on a motorbike, poured kerosene on Mona Suri and threw a lighted match-stick at her in Greater Kailash II.

The incident took place at around 8.30 pm on Saturday, the police said.

Mona's mother-in-law Kusum Suri, who also sustained burn injuries while trying to save her, said, "Two men fled from the scene on a motorbike soon after the incident."

"I did not see anything. Mona came running inside and as I tried to save her, I also received injuries," she said.

Police did not confirm reports that acid was also thrown on Mona.

The fashion designer's family claimed that Mona was receiving threatening calls for the past few days and was also attacked four days ago.

However, no complaint regarding this was made.

The fashion designer, who sustained 80 per cent burn injuries was first taken to Holy Family hospital from where she was rushed to Safdarjung hospital owing to the serious nature of the burns, police said.

Her condition is stated to be critical.

Suri's mother-in-law and her two-year old child were in the house when the incident occurred, police said.

Her husband, who was in Goa at the time of the incident, returned to Delhi on Sunday morning.
