The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Gujarat had failed to properly utilise funds received by it from the Centre under various schemes, senior Congress leader and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Wednesday.

"The Narendra Modi government has not properly utilised funds for the construction of roads under the Gramya Sadak Yojna and the National Employment Guarantee Scheme," Mukherjee said.

Speaking to reporters, Mukherjee said that though the Centre had allocated funds to Gujarat for the construction of 1,100 kms of roads under the Yojana, only 179 km roads had been laid.

"Gujarat was once known for its financial discipline, but the state is today reeling under debt. It's debt figure has risen to Rs 95,500 crore from Rs 45,000 crore," he said.

Dismissing Modi's charge of less allocation of Central funds to Gujarat, Mukherjee gave year wise figures saying a total of Rs 24,464 crore had been given to the state and not Rs 4,000 crore as claimed by the chief minister.

Mukherjee was in Gujarat to campaign for Congress candidates for the second phase of polling on December 16.
