Downplaying the court order to the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate party leader Jagdish Tytler's role in the anti-Sikh riots, the Congress on Tuesday maintained he was 'always innocent' and was hopeful he would come through clear of all charges.
"It is a judicial order and we have nothing to say about it. Law will take its own course. As far as our knowledge is concerned, he was always innocent and we know that he will come out of this clear of all charges," All-India Congress Committee spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told PTI.
He said up till now, Tytler has extended complete cooperation to the judicial process and will continue to do so.
Asked if Tuesday's development has again put the focus on the role of Congress leaders in the 1984 riots, he said, "No Congressman, woman or worker was involved in the riots".
"Of course, the other political parties who are our opponents will raise a hue and cry about it, but up till now, our leaders have been cleared of all charges," he said.
A Delhi court directed the CBI to reinvestigate Tytler's alleged involvement in anti-Sikh riots in 1984 after a witness surfaced in the United States offering to assist the probe agency, which had sought closure of the case.
