The Special Protection Group responsible for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's security took a man into custody for trying to get into 7 Race Course Road around 10.30 pm on Thursday night.
Though initial reports said that he was a policeman from the Delhi police desperately wanting to meet Dr Singh to place his problems before him, police sources later claimed that the man was a mentally deranged person.
However, the Intelligence Bureau confirmed that the intruder was a drunken Delhi police constable who was behaving in a suspicious manner and tried to get past the first security cordon of the prime minister's residence, but was arrested by the SPG personnel on duty.
The intruder identified as Traffic Constable Bhurra Singh now faces dismissal from the force, and also the charge of trespass.
Last year two young women from Jaipur had driven into the prime minister's residence claiming they were related to him. The two women were arrested and handed over to their parents after sustained questioning by various security agencies. A case of tresspass was registered against them.
