A national police memorial under construction in New Delhi and conceived during the National Democratic Alliance's term might be pulled down with a Group of Ministers favouring that the structure be dismantled.
Though there was no official word as to what transpired at the meeting, chaired by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, it was understood that the GoM was in favour of bringing it down.
The GoM's recommendation will go to the Cabinet for a final decision.
Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy, Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, and some senior officials attended the meeting. Earlier, the GoM members visited the construction site.
The Delhi high court had in August 2005 asked the Delhi Urban Art Commission Chairman to review the 44.5 metre high National Police Memorial under construction in Lutyen's Zone from the point of view of aesthetics, heritage and environment.
The court had stayed the construction in July 2004 on a suit filed by some prominent citizens of the city.
The then deputy prime minister Lal Kishenchand Advani had laid the foundation stone of the memorial on December 13, 2002, just a year after the terrorist attack on Parliament.
The memorial, being built on 7.5 acres in Chanakyapuri area, was billed to be the second edifice in memory of the country's forces after India Gate.
