Manipur is a difficult state: EC

Terming the conduct of polls in the insurgency-hit Manipur as a "difficult task," the Election Commission has asked the officials to ensure a peaceful and fair polls in the state beginning February 8.

The full Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy briefed the 31 poll observers on Wednesday on security aspects and strict enforcement of the model code of conduct in the state, which will go for a three phased polls on February 8, 14 and 23.

The observers have been told to send periodic feedbacks to the Election Commission.

The notification for the first phase of the elections to the 60-member assembly would be issued on January 13.

The CEC, who was in the state last week to oversee the poll arrangements, said sufficient number of central paramilitary forces would be available to ensure free and fair polls.

He said deployment of security personnel would be two and half times more than the previous assembly polls. The forces would start arriving in Manipur from January 15, he said.
