The Students Islamic Organisation has denied intelligence reports that Khafeel Ahmed, who allegedly drove a flaming SUV into the Glasgow airport in the United Kingdom, setting off a chain of international alarm, was a member of the organisation.
In a press release, M A Syed, press relations secretary for the SIO's Maharashtra South Zone, said Khafeel was not associated with them at any level.
The SIO, he said, has been working across the length and breadth of the country to prepare students and youth to 'reconstruct society in the divine guidance'. Since its inception on October 19, 1982, the SIO has emerged as the largest student organisation in the country, Syed said.
The SIO has lakhs of activists working from Delhi to Tamil Nadu, from West Bengal to Gujarat, to spread its message. Syed said the SIO has taken up and solved many student issues, like allocation of 6% GDP for education in the Budget, privatisation of education, impact of neo-colonialism on education, anti-cyber evils campaign (with an e-ethics day) and several regional and national issues that affect the student community.
In the recent past, the press release said, the SIO launched many activities in the country against the sex education programme, thanks to which effort the governments of Maharashtra and Karnataka had to repeal the programme.
