Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef, charged with supporting a terrorist organisation, on Wednesday filed an appeal against Australian government's decision to cancel his visa and keep him behind bars.

Haneef's solicitor Peter Russo declined to outline details of the appeal.

The matter will be mentioned in the federal court in Brisbane later on Wednesday. But Russo said the appeal hearing could be more than a month away.

The Gold Coast-based doctor has been charged with providing support to a terrorist organisation allegedly involved in a plot to blow up a London nightclub and Glasgow Airport.

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews cancelled Haneef's 457 temporary skills visa on the grounds he failed the character test.

The cancellation occurred this week just hours after Haneef was granted bail by a Brisbane magistrate, Australian media reported.
