Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef burst into tears on Tuesday after being shown photographs of his newborn daughter in the first family meeting allowed to him since he was detained three weeks ago.
Imran Siddiqui, a cousin of Haneef's wife, who flew in from India over the weekend, said both he and Haneef cried when they saw each other on Tuesday afternoon at the Wolston Correctional Centre, west of Brisbane, according to ABC.
The emotionally-charged visit lasted for about an hour and Haneef was shown photos of his daughter and family, which he was allowed to keep.
Haneef was reduced to tears on several occasions, including when he was presented with photographs of his baby daughter who was born on June 27.
"I think those were tears of joy when he saw his daughter," Siddiqui said.
Haneef has told investigators he was trying to fly home to see his newborn child, who was suffering with jaundice, when he was arrested at Brisbane International Airport on July 2 in connection with failed UK car bomb plot.
"Obviously he was very proud," Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo said, adding, "he had the look of the doting dad."
Siddiqui says he tried to comfort the 27-year-old doctor from Bangalore, charged with 'recklessly' providing support to a terrorist organisation.
"I told him that we all know he's innocent," he said, adding, "I did not tell that we believe he is innocent. I told him we all know that he is innocent."
