A city court on Thursday remanded three Gujjars to 14 days judicial custody for rioting and damaging public properties in east Delhi during a daylong shutdown in New Delhi on June 4.

The persons, accused of rampaging public property over violent demonstration in Khajuri Khas area of east Delhi, were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Dr Shahbuddin who sent them to jail till June 20.

The three persons remanded have been booked under various sections including 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 353 (assaulting public servant on duty) and 427 (damage to property) of the Indian Penal Code.

The court had earlier on Tuesday allowed bail to 12 others arrested by police, for their violent protests in different parts of east Delhi. Gurjars had, on June four, resorted to a daylong bandh in the national capital territory in support of their community's ongoing protest in Rajasthan demanding scheduled tribe status.

The protest had turned violent at different places after they torched vehicles, pelted stones at police and laid siege to all major roads leading to the capital. Six persons and three policemen were injured in stone-pelting and subsequent baton charge in Mehrauli, while a policeman and a rickshaw driver were injured in Khajoori Khas area in northeast Delhi.

As many as 24 buses belonging to Delhi Transport Corporation were damaged and three torched by protesters.
