With the Quattrocchi issue generating a storm, the government brought about peace in Parliament by holding a series of meetings in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Leader of the Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee were involved.

While Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat held talks with the prime minister and Mukherjee to defuse the situation, senior ministers also held parleys with Opposition leaders L K Advani and Jaswant Singh.

The ministers, including Parliamentary Affairs Minster P R Dasmunsi, kept Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee informed as also took the CPI(M) leaders into confidence to bring about normalcy in Parliament.

The demand for an immediate discussion on the Quattrocchi issue was kept aside by telling the opposition that such a move would create problems in government's efforts to extradite the Italian businessman from Argentina.

Dasmunsi told reporters that various options were suggested to the opposition and in line with that the prime minister made statements in both Houses on Thursday after Leaders of Opposition raised the issue.

The minister did not give a direct reply when asked whether the Quattrocchi issue could be taken up for discussion before the recess on March 21.
