All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam supremo Jayalalithaa will observe a day-long fast in Chennai on Sunday demanding that the Centre should notify immediately the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal's February 5 final award.

For the second time in her political career, Jayalalithaa, along with her supporters, would observe fast in front of Valluvar Kottam, a memorial for Tamil saint-poet Tiruvalluvar in the heart of Chennai.

She would be felicitated by leaders of her alliance parties during her protest which will begin at 9 am and will continue till 5 pm.

Jayalalithaa during her first tenure as chief minister in 1992 had gone on an indefinite fast demanding the Centre appoint a monitoring committee to oversee the implementation of the interim award of the tribunal.

She called off the fast on the fourth day after the then Union water resources minister V C Sukhla assured her that the Centre would take necessary steps to implement the interim award.

Jayalalithaa had then become the second chief minister in the state to stage a fast. The other one being her political mentor and AIADMK founder late M G Ramachandran, who in 1981 went on a day's fast demanding increased allocation of rice from the Central pool.
