Pakistan has formally conveyed to South Africa its interest in buying the country's long-range under water missiles.

A formal request to buy the missiles was put forward by Islamabad during the last meeting of Pak-South Africa Joint Ministerial Commission held last month, The Nation reported on Wednesday.

A Pakistan technical delegation would visit South Africa in June this year to assess the systems, which could fit into the Pakistan navy's requirements, it said, adding that more than other products Pakistan will be interested in this 'particular missile technology that is purely meant for naval forces.

The missile, which has range of 2,000 to 2,500 km, could target both ships and submarines.

However, there could be a delay in South Africa taking a decision to sell the systems to Pakistan as the government there has to go through cumbersome process and relevant Parliamentary bodies to sell the missiles.

Besides the defence cooperation the joint commission also discussed cooperation in the fields of agriculture, tourism, energy and education, the report said.
