The Presidential election schedule will be announced "any time now", Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy said on Thursday.

Kalam's term is expiring on July 24.

The chief election commissioner also said he did not see an early evolution of a two-party system in the country, saying the idea favoured by Kalam is "too difficult at this stage".

"To expect the country's politics to veer around the two-party system in the immediate future, I don't foresee. It is too difficult at this stage," CEC N Gopalaswamy said.

Suggesting that a two-party system would necessitate compulsory voting, he said that 28 countries have made voting a mandatory affair and only three countries have enforced it.

"In this country, enforcing is very difficult", the CEC said.

Speaking at the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence on May 10, Kalam had favoured an early resolution of a stable two-party system, saying it is one of the many challenges facing the nation.

"Many challenges need to be responded to: the emergence of multi-party coalitions as a regular form of government, that need to rapidly evolve as a stable, two party system," the President had said.
