Dismissing the perception that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have backtracked on the India-United States nuclear agreement, the Congress on Friday said that it has not changed its stand and everyone is adhering to the coalition dharma.
"The Congress' stand is the same... that energy in all forms including the nuclear power is good for India. However, at the same time, we have to abide by the consensus among our allies and coalition partners," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday.
"It is wrong to predict a doomsday scenario over the nuclear issue. It is not a win or lose situation. Our steps are in accordance with the Common Minimum Programme and the principles of coalition," Singhvi said.
Speaking about the Gujarat elections, he said, "We will explore all possible measures to defeat the corrupt and communal Narendra Modi government in Gujarat. Besides launching a Jan Chetna rally, we are also in the midst of working out a strategy for the state which cannot be revealed now."
Congratulating the government for not raising the oil prices, Singhvi said that the decision is historic, pro-people and bold as rise in oil prices always has a cascading effect.
"In spite of the international pressure, the government did not raise the oil price as a pro-people measure," Singhvi said.
