The Congress has asked party units to be prepared for early Lok Sabha elections. An indication to this effect was given by AICC general secretary Margaret Alva, who said the meeting of the coordination committee of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra saw both the parties underlining the need to get their act together in the event of snap polls.

Alva, who is also in charge of Punjab and Haryana, also asked partymen to be prepared for early general elections.

The party general secretary dismissed reports of differences cropping up between the two coalition partners in Maharashtra at meeting in Mumbai.

In fact, she said, the meeting saw the two parties underlining the need to get their act together so that communal parties do not gain strength in the region.

Alva steered clear of speculation over the fate of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, remarking: "Absolutely no comment. I know nothing."

Replying to a query, Alva said she was not aware of Deshmukh's visit to Delhi during which he met AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
