Janata Dal-United, a key ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, has decided to go it alone in the upcoming Assembly election in Gujarat.

"We have decided to fight elections without any alliance with the BJP in Gujarat. The party already has two legislators and we are striving to increase the tally," JD-U sources said after a meeting of party-office bearers in Delhi on Wednesday.

The party has some foothold in the tribal belts and "we are hopeful of gains in Saurashtra area this time," they said.

The JD-U has called a meeting of party Gujarat MLAs and office-bearers on September 22 to finalise its strategy for the elections expected later this year.

Today's meeting, chaired by party president Sharad Yadav, also took stock of the situation in Karnataka.
