Ninety-eight Delhi Traffic Police personnel, who were filmed allegedly accepting bribes from blue-line bus drivers in a sting operation, were on Saturday suspended from service.

Nine others also face departmental enquiry in connection with the sting operation on the alleged nexus between policemen and blue-line bus drivers who had earned notoriety for fatal accidents in the city.

Those suspended include 11 Sub Inspectors, an equal number of assistant sub inspectors, 10 head constables and 66 constables, said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.

"The personnel are suspended after verifying the authenticity of the tapes and identifying them," he said.

The sting operation was conducted by one Chetan Sharma, who submitted the tapes to Delhi High Court on January 9 seeking strict action against the erring personnel.

Sharma has moved the High Court seeking a CBI or judicial probe into the corruption in traffic police, but it had asked him to approach the Police Commissioner and Central Vigilance Commission in the matter.

Sharma said he had done two sting operations against police personnel with the help of blue-line bus owners at various places, including Dwarka, Dhaula Kuan and AIIMS.

Previously, he had conducted a sting operation to expose how Delhi Police officials allowed illegal sale of liquor in lieu of money. Around 25 policemen were suspended after this expose.

Sharma said he conducted the sting operations at 33 traffic signals in the city for a period of three months from October last year.

Policemen used to take Rs 400-500 from the drivers to overlook traffic violations, Sharma claimed adding that some bus operators also helped him in conducting the sting operation.
