Senior IPS official Ashwani Kumar took charge as the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday.

He was appointed as the chief of the premier investigating agency hours before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh left to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit in Sri Lanka.

"My top priority would be to reduce the trail time of our cases," the new CBI director told rediff.com.

When queried if he would ask for additional personnel for the short-staffed agency, he said, "This is a problematic area but it can be taken up later."

According to him, the CBI's most challenging assignment would be to solve the recent terror attacks in Indian cities – including the Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad and the Mumbai serial train blasts.

"I have just taken over and will take time to settle down," said Kumar, but added, "the CBI is under tremendous pressure to nab Dawood Ibrahim."
