In the wake of back-to-back terror attacks in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, the Centre is holding a meeting of top civil and police officials in Delhi on Friday to take a close look at security situation in the country and explore the possibilities of forming a federal agency.

The day-long meeting of chief secretaries and directors general of police spread over separate sessions will discuss the nature of recent attacks and the pattern emerging out of the serial blasts, which claimed more than 50 lives.

In view of increased security for the coming Independence Day, several chief secretaries and DGPs could not come.

The meeting being chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and is being attended by senior officials of the ministry responsible for internal security besides representatives of the states, official sources said.

At the meeting, the Centre is expected to offer training to state police personnel in the special branch by Intelligence Bureau officials.

The idea to have such a meeting was mooted by Home Minister Shivraj Patil when he reviewed the two serial blasts and had suggested measures to strengthen intelligence-gathering mechanism at the grassroot level.

The Centre also favours the idea of a federal agency to deal with crimes having inter-state and cross-border ramifications.

The matter is likely to be taken up at today's deliberations and a meeting of chief ministers in the near future.

The meeting is expected to discuss modalities to boost security measures for preventing such terror incidents.
