India expects Dr Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpin in the country's biggest kidney transplant racket, to be extradited soon from Nepal, where he was arrested on Thursday after a two-week search.
"I hope he will be extradited soon," Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told reporters when asked how long it would take to bring him to India. He said though there was no extradition treaty between India and Nepal, New Delhi will talk to Kathmandu in this regard.
"We have very cordial relations with Nepal and there will be no need of any extradition treaty," he said and thanked the Nepalese police for making the arrest.
Kumar was arrested on Thursday from a jungle resort at Chitwan near the Indian border and has been handed over to the Kathmandu police for interrogation. He is believed to have conducted over 500 illegal operations in a decade and is wanted by the police in Haryana and some other states.
An Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against the tainted doctor after the massive racket with inter-state and international ramifications came to light on January 24.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has intensified efforts for the extradition of the tainted doctor and is in touch with the Interpol and the Nepalese authorities in connection with the case.
Both the CBI and Haryana police teams would leave for Nepal to bring the doctor to India once the extradition process was completed.
