Pakistani ambassador to Afghanistan Tariq Azeezuddin was feared abducted in Pakistan's restive tribal's region on Monday while he was on his way to Kabul.

Azeezuddin, along with his driver and a security guard, who were travelling with him from his hometown of Peshawar in North West Frontier Province to the Afghan capital, went missing in Khyber agency, one of the seven semi-autonomous regions along the Afghan border infested by Islamic militants.

Security forces raised the alarm when the envoy failed to reach the Torkham border post on time, state run PTV said, adding a massive hunt has been launched to trace him.

The main road linking Pakistan and Afghanistan was closed for search operations.

Officials at another checkpost had earlier ordered the ambassador's car to stop "because they saw some local people sitting in the front seat. But they did not stop", chief administrative official in Khyber, Rasool Khan Wazir, was quoted as saying by AFP.

"Where they are we don't know. We have launched a search," Wazir added.

Two Pakistani employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross had disappeared earlier this month.
