"Buddhism is more relevant today than ever," said President Pratibha Patil after visiting Bodh Gaya and Nalanda

The President looked impressed by the "spiritual beauty" of famous Buddhist spots in Bihar during her visit on Friday.

After visiting the famous Buddhist circuit, including the ''remains'' of historic Nalanda University in Nalanda district and Bodh Gaya in Gaya, Patil said Buddhism was more relevant than ever for the World.

She also visited the Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment and offered prayers in the temple.

Officials of Archaeological Survey of India , who had accompanied her, briefed her about the great Chinese traveller Huan Tsang who studied in Nalanda University and also taught there during his visit to India.

She was also shown the roadmap drawn for development of 200 villages adopted by the proposed Nalanda University--an initiative by the Bihar government.

She is on two-day visit to Bihar amid tight security. She will also visit the Vaishaligarh, Shanti Stupa and other historic sites in Vaishali district on Saturday.
