The Bharatiya Janata Party's Mahila Morcha has revised its target for the number of participants in the Mahila Shashti Karan rally, to be held in New Delhi on Thursday, at the Ram Leela ground. But Sumitra Mahajan, National Prahari of the Mahila Morcha, denied the move.
When rediff.com pointed out that coordinator Kiran Maheshwari had said that the rally will witness over 2 lakh participants, and she herself put the figure at approximately one lakh, Mahajan said, " I would talk to Kiranji about it. We never mentioned having more than one lakh participants during our discussions. I am sending 10,000 workers from Madhya Pradesh myself," she said.
Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj was conspicuous by her absence at the press meet. "We will have participants from almost all the states and union territories. Besides L K Advani, party president Rajnath Singh, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and Sushma Swaraj are expected to address the rally," said Mahajan.
The majority of the participants are expected from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
"We want to first exhibit what we do and later fight for it. The United Progressive Alliance government should have implemented 33 per cent reservation for women. If for some reason, that is not possible, they should come up with an alternate proposal. They had said that they would implement the reservation when they came to power. Now it's time for them to go, so they should do something about it," Mahajan said.
