Pravin Mahajan, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his elder brother and BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, has been denied parole by the Nashik Divisional Commissioner.

Pravin had sought parole as his wife Sarangi has to undergo a surgery but the application was rejected earlier this week.

"Pravin's parole was rejected on the basis of a negative report from the Worli Police Station, which stated that he was a threat to Pramod's wife Rekha, daughter Poonam and brother-in-law Gopinath Munde," Pravin's brother-in-law Prasad Pulliwar said.

Pravin became eligible for parole as he has already been in custody for over two years.

He was sentenced to undergo life term in jail in December last year. But he has been in custody since his arrest on April 22, 2006, when he pumped three bullets into Pramod at the latter's residence.

He is currently lodged in the Nashik Prison.

Pulliwar said when they applied for parole in May this year, Nashik Divisional Commissioner sought for a report from the Thane jail authorities, where Pravin was kept earlier. Though the Thane authorities gave a clean chit regarding his conduct and previous criminal record, they asked Nashik authority to consult the Worli Police Station, which investigated Pramod Mahajan's murder.

The Worli Police Station, in turn, gave a negative report, Pulliwar said.

Sanjay Chahande, divisional Commissioner of Nashik, who rejected Pravin's parole, has cited the negative report given by the Worli police as the primary reason for refusing the plea.

Pravin's family, on the other hand, has decided to move the Bombay high court for parole. "We will move the high court by the end of July," Pulliwar said.

Under the criminal justice system, prisoners are let out on parole for a period ranging from 15 days to two months after they complete two years in jail. Reasons for being released on parole could range from a death or a marriage in the family to a medical emergency.
