The three-month long budget session of Parliament was adjourned on Tuesday, sine die three days ahead of schedule, amid acrimonious scenes in Rajya Sabha over the introduction of the Women's Reservation Bill.
While Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Monday, the proceedings in the Upper House came to a stormy end with the Janata Dal-United and Samajwadi Party members not allowing Chairman Hamid Ansari to make his customary concluding address.
As soon as the House met for the post-lunch session at 2 pm after two adjournments, JD-U and SP members were on their feet claiming the government had 'bulldozed' the introduction of the Women's Reservation Bill.
JD-U leader Sharad Yadav said that the government, in violation of rules of procedure, had not given the stipulated 48-hour notice before the introduction of a Constitution Amendment Bill.
The chairman, however, disallowed any reference to the subject, telling Yadav that he should have raised his objections when the Bill was introduced in the pre-lunch session.
As the SP members threatened to storm the well of the House, the chairman did away with his customary session-end speech and adjourned the House sine die after a rendition of the national anthem.
During the session, the Rajya Sabha had witnessed pandemonium for several days over Shipping and Surface Transport Minister T R Baalu's candid admission that he had 'put in a word' to the petroleum minister for allocation of gas to a company owned by his family.
