The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday said that it favoured the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the monsoon session of the Parliament and its implementation by next year's Lok Sabha elections.
"The BJP is whole-heartedly supporting the Women's Reservation Bill introduced in the Rajya Sabha. The bill should be discussed in the relevant fora and passed in both houses of Parliament in the coming monsoon session, starting in July," said BJP state in-charge of Himachal Pradesh Satyapal Jain.
He added that there should be no further delay and the next Lok Sabha polls should be contested in accordance with the legislation.
Jain flayed the Rashtriya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party, which are opposing the bill and demanding a provision for separate quotas for women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
When told that National Democratic Alliance ally Janata Dal - United was against the bill on the same ground, he said the BJP was not against OBC quotas, "but this should not be used as an excuse for delaying the act".
