Pakistan will release 101 Indian prisoners, a majority of them fishermen, as a goodwill gesture ahead of a meeting between the interior secretaries of the two countries later this week.

Pakistan has informed the Centre that it would release on Tuesday 101 Indian prisoners, including 99 fishermen from Gujarat, who were arrested after they ventured into Pakistani waters while fishing.

Sources described it as a reciprocal gesture to India releasing 29 Pakistani citizens on November 14.

All those being released have reportedly completed their prison terms awarded by the Pakistani courts. Fishermen had been in jail for two to six years while the other two Indians served the jail term longer.

They are being deported back as a result of efforts made by Pakistani Human Rights activist Ansar Burney who asked the Indian government to reciprocate by releasing more Pakistani prisoners languishing in the Indian jails.
