January 21, 2008: BJP submits a memo against Chawla to the CEC. Gopalaswami consults legal advisors about the matter.
February: EC prepares for the elections in Karnataka. Chawla goes on a month-long leave.
July 21, 2008: CEC sends a notice to Chawla, along with the BJP's memo, seeking his response about the allegations.
September 12, 2008: In his response to the CEC, Chawla states that he is seeking legal help about the matter. Chawla writes to the Law Ministry
September 17, 2008: Gopalaswami writes back to Chawla saying the matter is between the CEC and Chawla and the government has no role to play in it.
November 7: Law Ministry writes to Chawla, saying the CEC doesn't have suo moto power.
December 10: Chawla finally replies to the CEC notice and denies the BJP's charges
January 16: CEC recommends Chawla's removal.
